What is Botox® and Xeomin®?
Botox® and Xeomin® are a prescription medicines that are injected into muscles and used for a variety of treatment purposes. Our office uses them to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet lines, and forehead lines in adults. They are clinically proven to be effective in eliminating expression lines and wrinkles that occur due to repetitive muscle contractions involved in everyday facial movements. Botox® and Xeomin® are neurotoxins that are extensively studied and uniquely purified to remove unnecessary proteins from within the formula, making them effective cosmetic treatments when used by trained professionals.
How will I receive Botox*?
Botox* is a liquid injection that your doctor will give you, which is directly injected into your affected muscles. Your doctor may change your dose of Botox* until they find the best dose to help your unique needs.
What is the difference between Xeomin® and Botox®?
The main difference between Xeomin® and Botox® has to do with the formulation. Xeomin® is a stripped neurotoxin. This means that Xeomin® contains only a single ingredient (botulinumtoxinA), while the formulation of Botox® includes various protective proteins clustered around the active molecule (onabotulinumtoxinA). The benefit of Xeomin®’s pure-form means users have a lower chance of developing resistance (antibodies) that can limit its desired effects. Another difference between Botox® and Xeomin® is the onset of results. While the results of both treatments last for about the same duration (3-6 months), Xeomin® requires up to 4 days for results to fully form, while Botox® typically only requires about 72 hours.
How long will Botox* last?
The results of Botox* are temporary. After a period of time, it will wear off and the nerve impulses will begin to reach the muscle again (causing contractions and wrinkles to begin to appear again). Ultimately, this means that treatment does require periodic maintenance (typically every 3-6 months) in order to maintain the results over time.
What are the possible side effects of Botox*?
Botox* can cause serious side effects including, but not limited to: allergic reactions; dry mouth; discomfort, pain, or bruising at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; muscle weakness; eye problems such as reduced blinking or blurred vision; temporary facial paralysis (eyelid ptosis). Tell your doctor right away if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not resolve on its own. There have also been reported cases of problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing, due to weakening of the associated muscles, which can be severe and result in loss of life.
Botox* is temporary and the effects will wear off over time.
What are the ingredients in Botox® and Xeomin®?
Botox® active ingredients: onabotulinumtoxinA (produced from Clostridium botulinum type A). Inactive ingredients: sodium chloride and human albumin.
Xeomin® active ingredients: incobotulinumtoxinA. Inactive ingredients: human albumin and sucrose.
Botox* Post-Treatment Instructions:
Each injection site contains liquid product placed in a very specific area, it is of utmost importance to not disturb this area for a minimum of 4 hours by following the instructions listed below:
Do NOT lay down for 4 hours (including things like bending over for example while shoe shopping) This will reduce the risk of Botox* tracking into the eye area and creating eyelid drooping known as eyelid tosis.
Do NOT manipulate the treated area by rubbing, pressing, or aggressively wiping the area.
Do NOT receive facial, laser, or microdermabrasion treatments after Botox* injections for at least 7 days.
When cleansing your face or applying makeup, be very gentle and avoid facial pressure.
Do NOT perform activities involving straining, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for at least 8 hours after treatment. This will keep the Botox* in the injected area and not elsewhere.
You may apply an ice or cold gel pack to the area(s) treated (avoiding pressure) as this helps reduce swelling and the potential for bruising. Once you have adequately cooled/iced the area(s) as instructed and any pinpoint bleeding from the injection site(s) has subsided, you may begin wearing makeup.
It can take approximately 4 to 7 days for results to be seen. If the desired result is not seen after 2 weeks of your treatment you may need additional Botox*. You are charged for the amount of product used. Therefore, you will also be charged for products used during any touch-up or subsequent appointments.
You may take Acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness or discomfort.
